An interesting thing about Big Sur is that there are two types of restaurants—very high end/expensive and everything else. Lucky for us, my sister knew of a special place called Big Sur Bakery that did not break the bank. More than just a bakery, it serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. We enjoyed our lunch so much, we decided to go back for dinner.
On our way to Santa Barbara, we stopped for lunch at Robin’s in Cambria. Robin’s is situated in a quaint little house off the main street. Billed as global cuisine, there is something for everyone. I enjoyed my Vietnamese Banh Mi with marinated roast pork, pickled carrot, daikon, cucumber, cilantro, garlic aioli on a torpedo roll.
Los Arroyos is a cute spot off State Street. I was very happy with my Tacos del Mar and the refreshing jamaica agua fresca.
We had good timing when we walked into Haru Sushi and Roll for dinner. We managed to snag a seat without a reservation—when we left there was a line out the door. Miso soup, seaweed salad, too many rolls to name. Fresh, wholesome and affordable by sushi standards.
Settebello has really great wood oven pizza. We especially liked the Del Cafone pizza--wood oven roasted fennel sausage, roasted peppers, roasted onions, mozzarella, basil with extra virgin olive oil.
Local 1205 is a NY style deli/market on trendy Abbot Kinney that features specialty food, gourmet retail products, beer and wine, charcuterie, cheese cave, gourmet sandwiches, prepared foods, coal/wood fired pizza, fresh cut flowers, organic seasonal produce, organic juices, organic smoothies, organic coffees, pastries, desserts, and more. I loved the turkey sandwich with turkey sourced from Katz’s Deli. Honestly, this was a major improvement over the sandwich I ate at Katz’s in New York last summer. Local 1205’s turkey sandwich used amazing grilled bread with aioli, tomatoes and butter lettuce--the perfect lunch.

In and Out Burger--what would a trip to California be without a visit to this iconic restaurant? In and Out is opening in Round Rock in the near future--soon we don't have to travel very far out of Austin to get those juicy burgers. (Cathy)
