Late last month we visited the Austin institution, Fino, for a graduation celebration. There were several standout dishes, like the House Cured Salmon with red onion, creme fraiche, fingerling potatoes, pickled mustard seeds and croutons. This was really a delightful starter that can be easily shared. We also enjoyed the Carrot Agnolotti which is a stuffed pasta with crème fraiche (we got our crème fraiche fix that evening), lemon and nutmeg. It gave me the feeling of complete contentment and overall happiness when I took a bite. It was that good. My son ordered the Rabbit Paella for one (this item is listed on the menu as a dish for two) which is a Catalan sofrito with rabbit leg confit, asparagus and aioli. The rice on the bottom of the skillet dish is caramelized and can be scraped up as you go. The rabbit was moist and flavorful; a special treat. For dessert, my favorite is always the Lemon Sugar Donuts with strawberry jam and yogurt. This provides the satisfaction of homemade donuts without the fuss and muss. The one caveat about this item is that there are only three donuts on the plate and they are two-bites each—it’s gone before you know it. Perfect for one, but not really a sharing dessert. I did manage to snag a bite of the Mascarpone Tart with a gingersnap crust, local peaches and bergamot caramel. The caramel is what made this dessert sing. It was a table favorite. As always, Fino makes every meal a celebration. (Cathy)
The love of food and how it can bring people together led to the creation of this blog. As a mother of two grown boys, who have left the nest and occasionally return, I noticed a common occurrence-- there is usually someone at home who is hungry.
