With all of these drinks, we needed some food from the bar menu. The main attraction of the evening was the Burger and Fries which had double meat patties, Texas cheddar, iceberg lettuce, tomato, a blistered jalapeño on the side and thick fries served with aïoli. If you are familiar with Contigo, Gardner's sister restaurant, it is similar to the burger served there. Now until the end of November, Gardner's burger is 1/2 price ($6) during happy hour, 5:30-7:00 p.m. every day. The Bar Burger is served only in the Gardner Bar, and is not available in the Dining Room--major incentive to drop by during the appropriate hours any day of the week before December 1. Since I am gluten-free, I did not try the burger, but my companions all agreed, this was a classic juicy burger that would normally serve one, but can be split by two if ordering additional items.
We also tried the Whipped Chicken Fat with fingerling potato and hot sauce. A truly decadent appetizer that was a hit with the table. We finished off the whipped chicken fat with the remaining fries that were served with the burgers. Since I needed something more substantial to eat other than potatoes, we ordered the Chicken Thigh with forbidden rice, snow peas and coconut. This was a delightful dish that was a bit lighter compared to the burger, but still filling and full of flavor. I believe the rice was cooked in coconut milk, imbuing a slight Asian flair to the dish. The chicken was tender and the snow peas were a welcome bit of freshness. It was unanimous that a return visit to Gardner's happy hour will be part of our plans for this fall. The cooler weather we have in store in the coming days is the perfect backdrop to their beautiful patio.
