Every cocktail maker likes to have a fully equipped bar with the basic tools. It seems almost necessary to include a muddler in that toolkit. There was a recent blurb in Bon Appetit featuring an array of muddlers. This is somewhat interesting because about 15 years ago, the muddler was not so prevalent in the cocktail scene. With the popularity of the mojito in the U.S. in the early 2000s, all that has changed. I bought one years ago that I still use which has a short metal stem and a plastic end that resembles a meat tenderizer. Looking at what is available now, I admit I have muddler envy. I am eyeing this maple wood one made by Vic Firth (available online and in stores at Sur la Table), the drumstick manufacturer (my son's drumstick of choice). Very smooth, well designed and it seems like it would get the job done. A lot more glam and ergonomic than my current muddler. Maybe a backup is in order. Tomorrow's post will include a drink recipe that will put this tool to good use. (Cathy)
The love of food and how it can bring people together led to the creation of this blog. As a mother of two grown boys, who have left the nest and occasionally return, I noticed a common occurrence-- there is usually someone at home who is hungry.
