I started with the Fontezoppa Verdicchio from Marche, Italy. This prosecco, which pairs well with shellfish, is crisp, minerally with hints of citrus, lemon zest and brininess. My husband, more of a beer kind of guy, had the Zoe Pale Lager from Hops and Grain Brewing. Instead of ordering individual items, we decided to do "the whole shebang" which includes 6 of each type of oyster, 1 of each salad, snack and bread. The two types of oysters served that night were the Conway Royale (PEI) and the Wellfleet (MA). Both were decent size oysters that tasted fresh, cool and clean, served with a zesty cocktail sauce that didn't mask the rich taste of the oysters.
Next up was the Chilled Salad of Grilled Octopus with Burnt Coconut, Celery and fresh tarragon. This was a favorite, partly because of the unusual combination (which worked well) and also because we don't have octopus often. The tarragon was a really nice added touch. Their Classic Caesar Salad was respectable, but nothing too unusual. The anchovies were served whole, which I liked. The Crudo of the day was Salmon which was perfect in its freshness and flavor. It was served with olive oil, pistachios and small florets of cauliflower. The Fried Hushpuppies with Bacon & Mayo was a big hit. Precisely fried cornmeal dipped in the bacon mayo was a crispy treat that was a nice counter to the oysters.
Only a few items on this menu didn't resonate with us, one of which was the House Cornbread & Butter. Don't get me wrong, the cornbread was delicious, but since we were already having a moment with the hushpuppies, the cornbread seemed redundant. And it was served with the bacon mayo, which was a reminder of the redundancy. There is such a thing as too much corn in one meal. Also, the Poached Shrimp with Crispy Heads fell a little short. The size of the shrimp was generous, and it was nicely poached, but there was no flavor impact compared to the other dishes. Served with olive oil, tomatoes and Italian parsley, it was a tad too subtle. This won't alter my plans to return for round two of Oyster Tuesday though. On the whole, the menu was spot on and these minor oversights are not enough for me to stay away. Since the Oyster menu changes regularly, I am looking forward to what they come up with next. (Cathy)
