First, let's talk about the beer. Joe Mohrfeld, who has quite a reputation from his tenure at Odell's in Ft. Collins, Colorado, is the brewmaster at PHP. The style of brewing at Pinthouse Pizza is described as a "hop-forward, American-fusion that emphasizes the flavor and aroma of the beloved hop flower without the traditional bitterness associated with hoppy beers." Take a look at the recent video interview of Joe at Austin 360 by Emma Janzen to find out more about his beer philosophy and way of thinking.
We tried the Man 'O War IPA which is described as 6.5% ABV IPA with a "focus on the flavors and aromas of that glorious green cone… the hop…and not on melting your face with bitterness for no real reason. Man O’ War is a new school IPA!" We both loved it and would like to go back to try more from the prolific selection offered. The beer menu is broken into five categories: Mainstays (the beers they consistently produce in house), Seasonals, Exploration, Pilot Ships and Fallen Cask. In additional they have guest beers, or beers from other breweries--that adds up to 40 plus craft beers in all. They even offer a flight of beers to give you a taste of what they produce and feature.
The food menu is a whole other arena. As the name of the restaurant suggests, the menu is primarily dominated by pizza. There are classic pizzas, specialty pizzas, make your own pizzas, plus daily pie specials, salads and appetizers. We decided to split the Milano pizza, listed on the menu as a specialty pizza. It had olive oil, cheese, artichokes, Kalamata olives, prosciutto and fresh oregano. It was very fresh, hot, cheesy, with a spot on crust level. Not too thin, not too thick. A perfect accompaniment to our beer selection.
Pinthouse fits well in the community. Probably because it is locally owned and operated, With the casual, lively atmosphere, the long picnic tables reminiscent of old world beer gardens in Germany or England (and a subtle nautical theme sprinkled throughout), it is great for interacting with friends or family. Pinthouse Pizza is a welcome addition to the 'hood. (Cathy)
