Ready for a break from the rain? This drink has a definitively spring/summer feel, perfect for sippin' under the trees. The recipe from Seven Lamps in Atlanta via Town & Country Magazine, includes fresh watermelon juice (which I found at Central Market) and fresh basil. I did not use a Perlini carbonated cocktail shaker as suggested in the original recipe directions, but a splash of Topo Chico or club soda should help in a pinch (I omitted that from my drink and it was still delightful). I did add 3/4 ounce of lemon juice, which made a more balanced cocktail for my palate. I also recommend adding a slapped basil leaf in the mix; too good to save just for garnish. Salude!
Slice of Life
1 1/2 ounces gin
1/2 ounce honey simple syrup (1:1 ratio of water and honey; honey from Savannah Honey Co. is recommended)
3/4 ounce watermelon juice
3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice
1 slapped basil leaf, plus more for garnish
In a cocktail shaker filled halfway with ice, add gin, honey water, watermelon juice, lemon juice and 1 basil leaf that has been slapped a few times (to release the aromatics). Shake well for 20 seconds and strain into an ice-filled old fashioned glass. Garnish with a sprig of basil and a thin slice of watermelon if you have it. (Serves 1)
