At the recent lunch we were celebrating birthdays, so some in our group imbibed in cocktails and mocktails. I stayed with water but had a sip of a friend's Thai Grapefruit Martini with grapefruit, Thai basil and organic vodka. I experienced a twinge of regret for not ordering one since it had an herbaceous, balanced flavor and was very refreshing. During my dinner visit, we started with the Herb Hummus with Greek salad, feta and grilled pita bread (they will substitute/include veggies for dipping, like cucumber, if gluten is an issue). It was an addictive appetizer with lots of garlicy flavor. Try making it at home with the published recipe found in the Austin American-Statesman.
During my lunch I ordered the Seared Albacore Tuna Salad for entrée with avocado, grapefruit, cabbage, watermelon radish, Thai basil, toasted sesame and chili garlic dressing. The dish was well composed with ingredients that hit all the high flavor notes, and the tuna was perfectly seared. A few other friends ordered the same dish and all agreed it was a winner. Other dishes that were ordered included Grilled Chicken Salad (with dried cranberry, medjool date, jicama, manchego, farro, almond and champagne vinaigrette), Spicy Thai Curry Bowl (with organic potato, long bean, bok choy, ginger, lemongrass, basil and coconut milk--a dish I had for dinner last month), Teriyaki Quinoa Salad (with shiitake mushroom, broccoli, carrot, brown rice, bok choy, avocado and toasted sesame), Red Chili Noodles (with Chinese eggplant, gai lan, snow pea, shiitake mushroom, cashew and cilantro). All of these dishes were cleanly finished and enjoyed. For dessert we had the Flourless Chocolate Cake with caramel, vanilla ice cream and cocoa nibs--a deep, dark and decadent chocolate dream. But the table favorite was the Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp with almond crumble and vanilla ice cream. Nothing can top the strawberry rhubarb combination.
True Food Kitchen offers lunch, dinner, weekend brunch and there is even a kid's menu for the young ones. The outdoor patio is a lovely extension of the space and is completely covered. I am looking forward to a return visit to try their gluten-free pizza.
